1. Around 175km, mostly mountain road.

2. It takes about 3.5 hrs to arrive with smooth traffic. If with traffic jam or traffic control, it might take 5 hrs or even more, so please give yourself extra time to get to the destination.

Taipei→Taitung

1. Around 340km.
2. It takes about 6 hrs to get there if traffic is smooth. If with traffic jam or traffic control, well... you know…
Unless you’re really fond of driving or just on the road for the round island trip, otherwise, we don’t recommend it.

If you can’t book a direct train ticket, below are two suggestions:

1. Split the booking: For example, book a ticket from Taipei to Hualien, then book another ticket from Hualien to Taitung.

2. Tips from the locals: MRT+BUS+TRAIN
Step 1: Take MRT Blue line from Taipei Main Station to City Hall station.
Step 2: Take Capital Bus or Kamalan Bus to Yilan or Luodong Transfer Station
Step 3: Take train from Yilan or Luodong to Hualien or Taitung.
